February 10: Conjunction of the Moon, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn

Hello Friends of Dorian’s Secrets!

Today, February 10, 2021, the phenomenon of the Conjunction of the Moon, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn will be occurring. This astronomical event will be occurring between 20-30 minutes before sunrise in a Southeast direction.

The closest approach will be at 16:00 UTC and the three objects will be close to the horizon.

Did you know…

Two stars are in Conjunction when observed from a third (generally the Earth) are at the same celestial longitude. As the celestial latitude may be different, the stars are very close in the sky, although they do not coincide, passing one above the other. The conjunction is one of the main aspects of the planets. It is also applicable to any celestial object that is visually located next to another.

  • The Moon is in conjunction with the Sun when it passes between it and the Earth, that is, in the new Moon. If the latitudes are not very different, that is, if the Moon is close to the nodes of its orbit, an eclipse of the sun will occur.
  • The inner planets (Mercury and Venus) are in lower conjunction when they pass between the Sun and the Earth; then the planet is at the minimum distance from Earth and presents us with its largest diameter and its unlit side. If the planets have a small latitude (they are near the ecliptic or near the node of their orbit) then a transit of these planets through the solar disk can occur. The inner planets are in superior conjunction when it is the Sun that is located between them and our planet. They are then at the maximum distance from the Earth and have their smallest diameter and their face fully illuminated. They are difficult to observe because when they are close to the Sun they come out and get with it.
  • The planets outside the Earth’s orbit (the rest) can only be found in a higher conjunction, which is simply called a conjunction, since the planet cannot pass between the Sun and the Earth. It should not be confused with opposition, which is when the Earth passes between the Sun and the outer planet.
