Did you know…

Saturn is a god of agriculture and harvest from Roman mythology. He was identified in antiquity with the Greek titan Cronos, the myths of the two frequently intermingling. Although Saturn changed greatly over time due to the influence of Greek mythology, he was also one of the few clearly Roman deities who retained elements of their original function.

Mythology:

Satre was an Etruscan god who appears named in the Liver of Piacenza, a bronze figure used by the haruspices that contains some forty names of deities in Etruscan; perhaps that’s where the name of it comes from, although it could be, conversely, a mere translation from Latin. Saturn was represented as an old man with a long, thick white beard, with a sickle in his hand 2. He is the emblem of time and symbolizes it as something very old that destroys everything and ends.

The Greeks considered the sky as the oldest of the titans and gave it the name of Uranus, homologous of the Roman god Ceus, Caelo or Heaven. Of the firmament and of the Roman goddess Tellus or ancient Cybele or the Earth, there were two sons: Titan and Saturn, of which the second is the youngest.

Saturn obtained from his elder brother Titan the favor of reigning in his place but made one condition: “Saturn should not raise children.” He married Ops (Rea), with whom he had several children, but because of the pact he had signed with his brother, he decided to devour them. Ops hid Jupiter, Neptune and Pluto and made them raise them in secret showing only her daughter Juno. Titan discovered the deception and put him in jail along with his wife. As an adult, Jupiter waged war on his uncle Titan defeating him and returned the empire of heaven to his father Saturn (time). Saturn tried to kill his son Jupiter, but he defeated him and took over the empire of heaven. Thus the dynasty of Saturn and Ops endured to the detriment of that of Titan.

The myth concludes that Saturn was reduced to the condition of a simple mortal, going to take refuge in Lazio, where he put order among men and gave them laws. Another version says that he was well received by Janus, king of Lazio.

A Temple for Saturn:

In Rome, Saturn had a temple at the western end of the Roman Forum, where the public treasure was kept, because in the time of Saturn (that is, the golden age) there were no robberies, and numerous laws were also deposited . His statue was held in chains that he did not get rid of until December, the time of Saturnalia.

Saturn used to be represented as an old man bent over by the weight of years, holding a scythe to signal that he presided over time. In many monuments he was represented with a veil, surely because time is indeterminate and he is covered with an impenetrable veil.

How does the maximum approach between Mercury and Saturn influence the life of the Zodiacal Signs?
