Regulus:

Regulus (α Leonis / α Leo / 32 Leonis / GJ 9316) is the name of the brightest star in the constellation Leo. It is one of the four Mesopotamian “royal stars”, along with Aldebaran (α Tauri), Antares (α Scorpii) and Fomalhaut (α Piscis Austrini).

Visually it is blue in color and has an apparent magnitude of +1.35. It is almost on the ecliptic at only about 25 arc minutes, and towards August 23 it is on the other side of the Sun although the Sun does not hide it.

Curiosities:

The most common name for the star, Regulus, comes from Latin and means “little king.” Its origin must be found in the diminutive of its previous name, Rex, equivalent to Ptolemy’s Βασιλίσκος. This title comes from the belief that this star ruled heavenly affairs, a belief that lasted from 3000 BC. until the 16th century. Hence, as Sharru, “the king,” pointed to the fifteenth ecliptic constellation of Babylon; in India it was Maghā, “the mighty one,” in Sogdiana, Magh, “the great one,” and in Persia, Miyan, “the center.”

Another name also used, Basiliscus, is of Greek origin. It is also known by the name Qalb Al Asad, from the Arabic قلبالأسد qalb [u] al-´asad, which means “the heart of the lion”. This phrase is sometimes close to Kabeleced or is translated into Latin as Cor Leonis, the name by which this star was formerly known because of its location in the body of the celestial figure.
